massimoart:

This past month I had five board graphic release on Hopps, three of which were part of a larger, cohesive piece. If you were at one of the many Static IV premiers you may recognize this. I’ll be doing posts on each one over the next few weeks.

This started with the idea of doing a trifecta of “New York” pieces. Hopps wanted to project a feeling, or a “vibe”. They also wanted to create board graphics that felt more like a piece of art than a hot commodity. We ended up only doing two New York specific graphics, but three of them were eventually pieced together to make something larger.

We cycled through a bunch of ideas and ultimately fell on this “sketchbook” style for the New York pieces. The process of making them was very much an experiment and very different than I expected it to be. I found it really hard to draw something so loose that had to communicate something so specific. I didn’t really know if the flat figures would sit well in the space either.

I drew the background first and drew the figures separately, as quickly and loosely as possible, without it being sloppy. I cycled through a bunch of different styles and techniques and honed in on this one.

I was the least confident about this piece out of the three during the execution but the struggle ended up working out. Please enjoy (the ride (as Hopps would say))….

Get yourself one, skate it, hang it up, whatever. Available right here
